UC Students: Call for Editorial Board Members

Refract: An Open Access Visual Studies Journal is seeking new editorial board members to serve 2-3 year terms! Board members usually serve for a minimum of two years, but the term lengths can be flexible. Weekly, hour-long meetings are held remotely and scheduled to fit in the schedules of all board members.

Refract is a collaborative project founded in 2016 by PhD students in the Visual Studies program at UCSC. Our aim is to provide an open-access platform for non-canonical, interdisciplinary engagements with creative practices and cultural productions from diverse time periods and geographies. We have published three volumes, which can be viewed here, and will soon publish our fourth volume on the theme of “Documentary.”

We are looking for new editorial board members from all disciplines to join the team. The editorial board is made up of teams that are each responsible for different aspects of publishing the journal: the Digital team oversees the eScholarship platform through which we publish; the Fundraising team is responsible for identifying and pursuing funding sources; the PR & Outreach team is in charge of our social media presence and email correspondence; and the Managing team, made up of the Managing Editor and the Assistant Managing editor, coordinates across the teams and makes executive decisions. 

In addition to the duties for one’s specific team, all editorial board members work together in drafting calls for content, conducting peer review, soliciting guest contributors, co-writing the Introduction to each volume, and more.

If you are interested in joining the editorial board, please send the following to rabonner@ucsc.ed.

  1. A brief description of your interest in joining Refract and any relevant experience–although no experience is necessary.
  2. Your availability for an in-person meeting during weekdays between 9:00 am PT and 5:00 pm PT.
  3. A ranking of the teams according to which one you would like to be a part of: Digital, Fundraising, and PR/Outreach (1 = most preferred, 3 = least preferred). Please also indicate if you would be interested in eventually joining the Managing team.
